Hi Everyone. Attention Fabric Aficionados! The results of the TEXTILE CHALLENGE are in! Just in, the new Merchant & Mills pattern, ELLIS & HATTIE. NEW IN....Merchant & Mills hand block print 100% cotton. Just right for for summer dresses, skirts & tops. Here we have a lovely customer wearing her new Merchant & Mills trapeze dress in midnight linen. She confided in me (and I know she won't mind you all knowing) that she had the pattern for some time before she finally got up the courage to make it. Now, there should be no stopping her with this kind of success! Well done. Finished.............. Progressing well with the trousers. Made a mistake that I will now not repeat.....put the patch pockets on the back BEFORE doing the darts agh. I'm keeping them that way though to remind me! I enjoy sewing. No surprise perhaps but I don't consider myself a seamstress. It just seems to me that if you have a pattern and instructions, you just do as it says. Okay, maybe you will make mistakes but you'll know what you've done wrong and correct it- that's learning. Having this philosophy I am always trying to inspire customers to have a go. So, feeling I too should challenge myself, I have begun my first EVER, pair of trousers! HAPPY BIRTHDAY HERRINGBONE! Here are 2 very lucky cats! They have a new quilt created by Rachel to snuggle up in and dream their days away. Having a seaside theme I bet they dream of fresh fish! Lovely quilt Rachel, well done. These photos were sent to me by a new sewist and what a lovely project for a first effort- sewing a sling for your baby. Entry for adults is £20 and you will receive 1 metre of fabric (this time with a choice of 5 different ones), a story written especially for the challenge & the rules all within a cotton canvas shopping bag.
Entry for under 18's is just £3 but you must provide your own 1 metre of any cotton fabric.

Like our previous sewing competition, Herringbone is back! Just in case anyone was planning a visit tomorrow, I will be closed all day Friday 16th December as it is my youngest son's 18th birthday. Open as usual again on Wednesday 21st, Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd. I will also be closed Christmas eve.
Just wanted to let you all know that a new fabric lover is going to take the helm at Herringbone! From October, Sarah Honeychurch will be the proud new owner. She has a wealth of dressmaking and craft experience and is a whiz at up-cycling clothing. She is keen to offer classes & workshops and will be making lots of beautiful things too. I wish her every success and will be popping to buy fabric!

The linen is currently only available in 'Goodnight' (navy), 'Calamine' (dusky pink) and 'Oxblood' (rich brown) and stocks are low so if you were planning a cool linen summer dress, hurry along before they're gone.

It is one year today that I have been at the helm of Herringbone and it has been wonderful to meet all you lovely people who have browsed, shopped and shared philosophical musings with me. I have enjoyed my year and have learnt many things, particularly about myself.
I now know that I must return to what I consider to be my vocation, teaching. Therefore, Herringbone is up for sale!

First place in the adult section went to Carolyn with her beautiful 'Paddington Bear'. Her bear has removable clothing and his own satchel. It is expertly sewn with great attention to detail; just lovely. Well done.
Second place went to Katie with her 'purrfect' cat. This pattern matched feline comes with a removable skirt (and tail!) Well done.
First place in the youth section went to Evie with her delightful wall hanging. Evie decided to illustrate details from the story and created a wonderful piece. Not only does it exhibit sewing & creative skills but she also dyed all her fabric with food colouring so her work smells good too! Congratulations.
Second place went to Alisha with her button-eyed cuddly. Alisha even gave her creation a toy of it's own (the fluffy pompom). Congratulation.

I'll be honest and tell you that they are a little big on the waist but with a belt they'll be fine. I found the pattern quite straightforward and easy to follow but would suggest that some experience is needed.
For my next project I'll have to think of something else I haven't done before and keep up the challenge.

The 'Portia' pattern by Sew me Something is my choice as it gives experience in patch pockets, belt loops, side pockets & a zip. I've chosen Merchant & Mills 'Goodnight' linen (which is much darker than the picture shows and have cut out all 9 pattern pieces.

Happy New Year to everyone and I hope my extended closing didn't effect anyone negatively. As of today, the shop is open as usual from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday to Saturday. I look forward to seeing customers old and new.
